Personal hygiene



Hygiene is the science or art of maintaining good health through practicing sanitary principles. Good personal hygiene improves the health status of the individuals.

Personal hygiene can be achieved in many ways some of which are:

1. Regular washing down of the body with water and soap to prevent skin infections.

2. Personal sponges and towels should not be shared to avoid contagious diseaseS

3. Fingernails and toenails should be cut short and clean to avoid breeding of micro organisms. Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water before preparing food, eating and after every meal.

4. Getting enough rest and sleep to avoid fatigue. Regular care of the teeth; washing of the teeth after every meal.

5. Regular washing of clothing to keep them neat. There should be suitable and improved ventilation and lighting for work, play and sleep.

6. Medicine should not be taken without a physician's advice.

7. Avoid alcohol, tobacco and other dangerous drugs. Keep cooking pots, plates, cups and other utensils clean.

8. Keep flies out of the house or at least away from food and utensils.

9. Fruits which are eaten without cooking should be washed in clean water in case they are contaminated with pathogens.

10. Unless you know that a pond or river is free from disease causing organisms and from the water snail which carry ichistosoma sp, you should avoid paddling, bathing or Washing in such places.
