What is diabetes? Is it dangerous? Can it be prevented or treated?


Diabetes mellitus (DM) or simply diabetes occurs when dangerous metabolic disorders come together to cause high level of sugar in an individual's system for a long range of time.

It is mostly caused by inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas or the inability of the body cells to respond and utilise the insulin released by the pancreas.


Symptoms.

1. Intense hunger.
2. Intense thirst.
3. Frequent urinating.
4. Excessive weight gain.
5. Fatigue.
6. Sexual dysfunctions.
7. Tingling in feet.
8.  Numbness in hands

If diabetes is not treated on time, it can result in:
1. Hyperosmolar 
2. Death
3. Ketoacidosis
4. Stroke
5. Foot ulcer
6. Kidney
7. Cardiovascular diseases




Types of diabetes.

There are three different types of diabetes. Their names are as follows:

1. Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
This is normally caused by the inability of a person's pancreas to make available enough insulin for effective functioning of certain body cells.
It was first known as the juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

2. Type 2 diabetes mellitus
This type of diabetes occurs as a result of the inability of certain body cells to utilise the insulin produced by the pancreas effectively.
This type of diabetes was first known as adult onset diabetes or non insulin-dependent diabetes. 
Insufficient exercise and too much weight gain can result in the result in this type of diabetes.

3. Gestational diabetes
This type of diabetes normally occurs when there is abnormal rise in blood sugar levels of a pregnant woman.


Prevention

1. Regular exercise
2. Adhere to a healthy dietary patterns.
3. Check your body weight always. 
4. Stay completely away from tobacco.
5. Check your blood pressure.

Treatment

1. With the type 1 diabetes mellitus, injection of insulin  can be very helpful in treating and getting rid of the entire disease.
2. Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus may be given certain oral medications and insulin or sometimes no insulin. This medication will help lower the blood sugar levels significantly.

3. Individuals who are suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus caused by excessive weight gain, will have go through surgery in order to get rid of the diabetes.


4. Pregnant ladies with gestational diabetes should not panic since this type of diabetes disappears or wears off after they have given birth.
