Apple is said to be working on a satellite technology for direct wireless iPhone data transmission

Apple wants it's devices to be able to connect to each other without the help of third parties; this means an iPhone user can communicate directly with another iPhone user through iMessage or voice call without any third-party network involved.

This can be achieved with the use of a satellite. According to Bloomberg, Apple is not going to be putting up its own new satellite; they would use an existing one but would rather build and develop new devices and equipments on the grounds to enhance and improve and make sure communication is effective once the satellite is all programmed up to perform its task.

Michael Trela and John Fenwick; Skybox Imaging alumni, Ashley Moore Williams; former Aerospace Corporation executive, alongside engineers and executives from the aerospace and satellite industry, were all hired by Apple to bring onboard the useful information and expertise they have.
